AHHHHH! Is finding what to wear or styling for family photos stressful for anyone other than me!? If your family is like mine, every fall, we get new family pictures made. And every year I go through the same “what do we all wear” debacle.
I love to have updated ones of the kids and a new one of all of us together. I use them for our holiday cards, profile pictures and usually update a few in frames around the house. I send them to family and the hubs takes one to his desk at work. We love getting them from friends and family and of course sharing our photos with others as we make memories and watch the kids grow.
Part of the excitement of family pictures is coordinating and styling our outfits and while wardrobe styling can be fun, it can also be stressful.
I hear all of the time, “I have NO idea how to decide what to wear!” and so today, I want to give a few quick tips and ideas to think about as you dress and style your family for your photoshoot. Hopefully these ten tips will make this years dress selection a tad easier!
Think of a family photo in the same manner as composing music. Like a song, you should have harmony, balance, coordination and flow – different keys (er, family members) and multiple instruments (er, outfits) all contributing together to make a melody and beautiful song and nothing to be off key or glaring out.
The music is easy on the ears and the photo is pleasing to the eye. You want the family to be a bit different, but all flow and no one to stand out. Make sense?
I usually pick ONE outfit as inspiration and then style the rest around it. This year, I fell in love with a navy and white buffalo check shirt and the furry vest. I knew it would be perfect for my little girl. I used that and then styled the rest of our outfits around it to coordinate.
Here are ten tips on how to style for the perfect family photo!
Consider your personal style. Do you like brights and fun? Are you more neutral or classic? Eclectic? These pics represent you and your family and will for years to come! Let them reflect that in your dress.
Chambray (denim colored) is always a winner. You can mix and match and pair it with so many colors that whether you are going neutrals, brights, fall tones or summer, it is an easy addition. If you are just not sure what direction to go in, find your ONE item to build around, throw in a chambray top and let the inspiration flow.
