This tomboy mama over here never thought I’d be so excited about a Little Mermaid Birthday Party, but when Annie M requested the theme for her 7th celebration, I was pretty pumped! Not only was I excited about the theme, but about the fact that my best girl shares my love for an over the top party! We took to Pinterest together, online shopped a bit and started planning!
As we pinned all things purple, turquoise, green and mermaid-y, we decided quickly that we didn’t want to scare the boys off with all things princess! She requested a water balloon fight (“so the boys would come” – ha), water guns and fish catching. Uhhh……with that request, my mind started to churn and the wheels started to spin…
I found the cutest little invites on Etsy, bought her the perfect party outfit from Tar-jay, did some shopping at Oriental Trading Company and before you knew it, party day had arrived!!
She really had her heart set on catching fish, and this mommy certainly did not want to let her child down. Go ahead, roll your eyes.
For fear of having to have extra goldfish pets too far in advance (read as goldfish dying pre-party), the night before the shindig at around 7:30 PM, her and I went scurrying off to the pet store. She was GIDDY. All smiles and beaming from cheek to cheek.
The first pet store (that I had called earlier to do a price check, ensure they were in stock, yada, yada, yada) told me upon arrival that, “their fish were diseased.” Since this is a family friendly blog, I won’t tell you the actual disease he likened it to, but lets just say they were being treated for their issues.
By now it was 8:05 pm and Annie M was in tears. I asked the guy where the next closest store was, had him call to ensure their fish were not diseased and she and I took off running. We made it by 8:43 pm and after a semi-feisty exchange with the rep who didn’t want to sell me the fish if they weren’t ONLY for large tank use (never mind the fact they are $0.14 feeder fish) we had our fishy friends and were headed home.
Y’all. I am an animal lover, but the dude went through the ways fish could die, how I may be slowly killing them and then went and got manager approval. The manager was like, uhhhhh, give the lady her fish. Phew.
At one point, I thought of reneging on the whole fish idea, however Annie M was so into it at this point, there was no turning back. I had intended on giving them to some of her friends (I asked their parents weeks in advance AND who I ensured they had tanks) but after this, I was terrified and just decided we would keep them and give them a happy life.
By the time we got home (15 minutes from the store) four of the 20 fish had kicked the bucket. Annie M and I had a good lesson over it all and the 16 remaining made themselves quite comfortable in their new home in our kitchen.
Daddy was in charge of blowing up balloons while I started with the decor! This was the weekend of Hurricane Irma and we had friends in town as well! I felt terrible for opening up our home to them as they evacuated from the Florida Keys and then throwing an Under the Sea party.
Irony at its finest, I suppose!
I had the cupcakes in the oven while I worked on decorations and when they came out, I iced them! They were SO simple, but I thought came out adorable!
The mini forks (a.k.a dinglehoppers) and shells came from Oriental Trading Company and then I used graham cracker crumbles for the sand and vanilla wafers for the oyster shell. The pearl was a cupcake topper that I picked up at one point in time! These may have been the fastest and simplest cupcakes/cake I have ever made and really turned out the most fun!
The next morning, Brother had a soccer game, Annie M had dance and our friends were at our house. I went simple as it related to food (i.e. not a ton of cooking as we had lots going on) but the theme was so easy to pull off and super cute! The “crab sandwiches” were really chicken salad. I had intentions of putting eyes on them, but just didn’t have time!
Here is a picture of the table setting, food and inside decorations!
I loved the grass table skirt and the fish net. I had a gazillion ideas I could have run with those on! I thought it turned out super cute though and most importantly, Annie M loved it! 🙂
For the party games, we had a water gun fight, a mermaid tail race (a.k.a. sack race because mermaids don’t have legs!), a water balloon fight and then the kids caught fish. We had all of the fish in a big pool and they used nets or their hands and caught them to put back in the bowl!
The fish catching was definitely the highlight of the party. Everyone asks how I came up with this idea. I wish it were original, as I do like to come up with ridiculously crazy ideas, however, I cannot claim it!
Growing up, my neighborhood pool always used to do it on the 4th of July. They would dump a gazillion fish into the baby pool, we would catch them all with our hands and then take them home! The parents had just as much fun watching as the kids had playing and at AM’s party, the sentiment was the same!
We did not send the fish home though and we have kept these crazy things now for well over a month. Would you hate me if I said I was ready for them to DIE!? Please rest knowing that even the ones who do die, our baby sitter pulls out and saves in water should we want to feed them to other fish. #cycleoflifeyall
As Annie M’s friends departed, we gave them sand art kits. Originally, I thought that if we had lots of extra time, I would use them at the party, but after chasing 30 six and seven year olds around and letting them run like wild monkeys in the backyard while trying to facilitate water fights without getting drenched myself, we didn’t have any spare moments!
It turned out to be the perfect “thank you for coming” gift and was quite apropos given the theme!
All in all, it was an awesome day! I can’t believe my baby is seven! We celebrated with donuts at her school, taking her and her brothers to Chuck E. Cheese and then continuing the celebration right on in to Happy Chappy’s birthday! Its such a fun season for us and while I was worn out – and in a sugar coma – I wouldn’t have it any other way!!
