My kids love minions so when we were walking through Target yesterday and spotted the new Minions movie that released a few days ago, we had to pick one up.
I told them that we would get the movie, have a “Minions movie night” for them, bake cupcakes and couple it with a Christmas party…It only seemed right to combine it all into one party filled awesomeness and thats just what we did!
We snagged the Target exclusive, Minions Metal Pak Blu-ray/DVD (currently you get a $5 gift card back when you purchase it!) and while there we also picked up some party supplies and a few Christmassy things for our shindig. The movie launched December 8th so is brand new.
We found ours in the video/electronics section of the store and thanks to the little (or large?) yellow minions display, it was easy to spot! My kids were squealing and all wanted to hold the Minions movie for a picture!
Can I just confess how much I love Target…I love it that I can get all I need at one place and call it done. I am one of those go in for a few things come out with a buggy full, plus a few extras!
When we got home, the plan was to set up for the party, me make a “tear away cupcake cake” that night and have a few friends over the next day. Turned out that friends and family were in and out over the next day and since the kids were so into it, I left the party stuff up and we had fun taking pictures with whomever was here!
With themed parties, I like to start with a vision board and this time, instead of a vision board, I drafted a minion invitation to get my creative juices flowing. I am including a blank one here for you and the link to download it is included at the bottom of this post! I knew I wanted all yellows and blues and lots of little minions or images of minions all over and I think it turned out adorable and perfectly festive for the party!
For our party, we served yellow (or close to yellow) food and included banana slices, cantaloupe, pineapples, popcorn, grilled cheeses, and of course the minion tearaway cake. I also found minion gummies, so I added that to the table and the kids were excited!
Should you be throwing a minion party, easy games to include are photobooths with cute props, pin the goggles on the minion for kids, minion musical chairs, make a minion (by decorating balloons, bags, etc.), piniata minions, minion bowling with empty 2-liter bottles, etc.
For decorations, yellow balloons, yellow cups, yellow plates or yellow gift bags are EASY to tape minion goggles on and use their fun expressions and faces to decorate all over.
Speaking of minions and all of this yellow, does this remind anyone else of emojis?? I LOVE all things emojis and so as I decorated with minions, I threw in a few emoji faces and they made me giggle every time. I love that with minions (and emojis) really, anything goes and for me that makes it all the more fun!
For our party, since it was a holiday Minions movie party, the kids made “minion houses” – a.k.a gingerbread houses. While we were at Target, I picked up a great kit that included four little houses. If you are doing this with friends, this is a great kit to do as it didn’t take long and everyone could participate and have their own little house!
While they finished up their minion houses, I finished setting everything out for the party. By the time everyone was fed and ready to watch the movie, it was close to bedtime, so we started it but then promised the kids that our official Minions movie night will be continued soon!
Below is the food spread. My grilled cheese sandwiches (you can hardly see at the top left of this picture) I used cookie cutters to stamp out! YALL. Easy and cute party trick right there! They were minion faces with goggles on them – and you can kind of see in the pic!
The party was lots of fun and the kids have loved all things minion! Brother won’t take off (or share) his one eyed (goggled??) hat and I have a feeling that my little minions will be enjoying it all for days to come!
Below is a step by step of how I made the tear away cupcake cake. If you aren’t familiar with a tear away cake, basically, since it’s all cupcakes, there is no cutting involved. You can still have one “cake” and a big design, but instead of slices, you can just grab a cupcake!
They are really easy to make and serving it (or the kids helping themselves as mine do!) is a breeze. I used a boxed mix for the cupcakes and then my normal icing recipe (you can find it under the tutorials link in the drop down menu). I did almost all of the icing with a spoon, knife or spatula, so no fancy icing tools or piping instruments necessarily needed! I did fill in the mouth with a icing tip, but I could have left it as it was if I wanted! Anything goes with minions and emojis, remember!?
Here is how you make it…..
Before you begin to make a cupcake cake, always lay out your design (or shape) with the cupcake wrappers. I do this on my counter, but it helps me to see if I should make big or small cupcakes, or how many of each and how it will look. Below, you can see that I found a minion image online and then just did my cupcake holders in a similar “shape.” I just happened to have yellow cupcake holders on hand, so I used those along with the white ones I had.
Now that we know how many cupcakes we will need and kind of have a visual of how it will look, make your cupcakes. Again, I used a boxed mixed, so quick and simple.
While they bake, I usually take my cake board or cardboard or whatever you will be placing the cupcake cake on and cover it with foil to get it ready. I just tape it on the back. That picture is below.
Once the cupcakes are made, I let them cool for a few minutes and then again place them onto the cake board in the shape that they will go. At this point, I want to make sure that all will look right and double check that I have enough cupcakes for my cake.
As I did this for my minion, it dawned on me that I had extra cardboard goggle prop from my photo booth. I could have (and planned on) making the eyes with icing, but using this as a cake topper is a SIMPLE trick and helps you if you aren’t confident in your icing abilities! It also makes finishing off a cake fast as its less to ice.
I trimmed the prop to fit on the cupcake cake and then set it aside. Below is where I placed the cupcakes again and tried on the cardboard goggles for size. Looking more minion like!
While the cupcakes finished cooling, I made the icing. Before I begin to ice, I pick up each cupcake one by one and put a dab of icing on the bottom. This helps it stick a bit more and not slide around. When you put them on the board, push them tight together to minimize the space between cupcakes. Once they were all done, I started to ice my cupcake cake.
There are a few ways you can do this. For this, as mentioned above, I just pushed my cupcakes as tight as they could go, took the icing and then spread it just like I was doing a cake.
If your icing is falling between cupcakes, you can actually fill that space with icing and then just spread icing over it. This will still allow you to just grab a cupcake and go – and not have to cut.
I do one color at a time. Once I finished the yellow, I did the blue and once the blue was finished I added the hands, shoes, hair, buttons, mouth and filled in the eyes with black.
Cupcake cakes don’t take very long and I think he turned out really cute! If you have questions about how to make a tear away cupcake cake, please let me know!
As for the rest of the party supplies, all of the minion apparel (hats, etc) and paper products pictured, I got from Target. They had lots more licensed goodies and books that the kids would have loved and they may find a few more minion things in their Christmas stocking! The invitation I created by purchasing digital scrapbooking images and then building it in Photoshop for our party.
We love all things party around here and I love how fun and easy this one was to pull off! The DVD would make a great stocking stuffer, so get yours before it sells out, plan your own movie night, bake a tearaway cake and enjoy!
